Patience Learning to play the guitar takes time, take it slowly and practice every day. And don't be surprised if it hurts - it will take time to build up calluses on your fingertips and while you do it will be painful - but keep practicing and they will build up.
Timing Start out by practising with a metronome, this will help you develop good timing.
Learn the Basics First Whatever your long term aims in learning to play the guitar, you'll get there much sooner if you take it slowly and learn and practice the basics - how to hold the guitar properly, how to finger a chord properly, how to read music or tab notation. And when you practice make sure you always sit or stand correctly and hold your hands on the guitar correctly - don't get sloppy and slouch - develop good habits from the start
Your Guitar Make sure the guitar is suitable for learning on, an unsuitable instrument will make learning to play much harder. It should be fairly easy to play and tune, and suitable for the type of music you want to play. An old or cheap guitar may seem a good choice to start with but could have so much wrong with it that you will struggle to learn to play with it. If you're not sure get a guitar-playing friend to check it out for you.
Listen to all kinds of music. Don't limit yourself to just one kind, even if you don't like some music styles you can get ideas from them.
